The Bairro Alto Hotel in Lisbon

During my trip to Lisbon for the Fashion Week I had the chance to stay two nights at the Bairro Alto Hotel and enjoy it’s charming flair.

We arrived at the hotel by cap and the taxi driver directly tried to sceam us, I think this is normal when you take a cap from Lisbon airport for the first time – however never happened to us in the city again – asking us for 30€ …. That is just way too much! We asked before we took the can how much it could amount to and it should have been at 15€!! Happily the cab driver accepted out protest quite easily.

Arrived in the Bairro Alto Hotel we received a warm welcome from the staff offering fresh orange juice and sparkling wine.

We arrived at 10am and our room wasn’t ready yet, so the staff escorted us to a waiting area in order to have a drink before we could go up and get homy in our room.

The seats were incredibly comfortable and I was having a hard time to get up again afterwards.

Bairro Alto: The Rooms

Up on entering the room, the first thing I saw was the ‘pastel de nata’, a delicious sweet from Lisbon, that you HAVE to try and a glass of port wine – a nice welcome gift I’d say.

The rooms were kept in a certain vintage style in order to keep the original image of the hotel. The bed was sooooo comfortable I didn’t want to get up -again.

So, here’s the thing, normally you suggest to never look under the bed or take of the sheets of the bed, but as a blogger that is part of the job, so I checked and I probably have NEVER seen cleaner sheets in a hotel before ! Definitely a big plus!

The bathroom was not one of the biggest and if you are travelling in two this might not be the most comfortable part, but it was good organised and the only thing I could possibly mention, is that it took me a moment to understood the shower – but also this only a small detail.

When my friend came out of the shower, the first thing she told me was how amazing the slippers were, and I must say they really were comfortable. – this hotel did absolutely focus on detail.

Bairro Alto: The service

The service personnel and service is only to be describes as outstanding service. I must truthfully say, that the service is probably what makes this hotel a member of the Leading Hotels of the World.

During my whole stay, the reception personnel knew without any additional information the name and room number of me and my friend. Everyone was polite, very helpful and discrete at the same time. There was not one person working in the hotel, that did not greet with an honest smile, creating a feeling of comfortness at all times.

My friend who stayed with me in Lisbon was as unlucky as to get ill during our trip and the receptionist did continuously ask about her well-being and if she would need any additional hot tea or water – on the house.

Bairro Alto: The breakfast

The breakfast room was very quite small but very comfortable and organised in a good way. Also here the personnel was very friendly and helpful.

The buffet offered everything that you need in the mornings, fresh fruit, cheese and meat plates, croissants and other local sweet delicacies. The orange juice was fresh and offered directly on arrival.

Another thing, that is very important for me, is that the coffee is of good quality. Having lived in Italy for years, I think this just becomes normal – and I was not disappointed, the espresso was great!

If you’d like to have anything extra or are missing something on the buffet, just ask the waiters for help, they did everything in their power to make everything possible.

Bairro Alto: The Terrace

One very nice feature of this hotel is the beautiful terrace and it’s view. When I was staying at the Bairro Alto Hotel unfortunately works were going on and the view was limited because of that. In any case the view is beautiful and great for taking pictures, so you should go up and have a look!

Bairro Alto: The Location

The hotel’s location is just the perfect spot for either, a business trip or a holiday stay. The drive to the airport is around 20 minutes and the center is just in front of the hotel. You have bars all around the hotel, good restaurants, shopping places as well as all the sightseeing in the city center is on walking distance.

The hotel is situated just in between the Bairro Alto, where you can find nice bars and restaurants on a budget as well as with higher quality and the Chiado, where nice local and international shops can be found and the nightlife starts as of 10pm. Baixa is also just of a 10minute walk and is the center hearth of Lisbon, where you will find the international shops and a whole bunch of tourists walking from one sightseeing location to the next one.

Conclusions

The hotel is a great place to spend your days in Lisbon, it is comfortable and the service is amazing. I’d absolutely recommend you to spend your days in Lisbon at the Bairro Alto Hotel, if you’re looking for a comfortable luxury stay.

Hi Monika,
to be honest, Lisbon is just awesome as it is. I have been there mainly for fashion week so I didn’t have the time to see all about it. But you guys should just wonder through the streets and take in the flair of the city!
Try the “vino verde” which is a typical white wine from the area, walk all up to then go down the pendant streets in Lisbon, go shopping lovely places and so cheap! Try the pastij de nada such an amazing dessert! Best restaurants are probably the small ones in Cita alta ! I am sure you’ll enjoy it a lot! 🙂

Looks like such a cute and quaint place!! I feel like staying in hotels is a vacation in itself. And it helps to have awesome rooms and great service! I have been dying to go explore more of Europe so gotta keep this in mind!

I’ve never heard of this hotel, but it sounds great! I love Lisbon, so I would always want a place to stay there. And the price is reasonable for a hotel of this quality. Also glad to hear the coffee is good.
